Every year, millions of unfortunate people find themselves in a car accident, especially in winter as the roads begin to freeze. Minor collision or not, you should be prepared with what proper steps to take after an accident. How you act following an accident can help in lowering the damages to you, the other person and both vehicles.
Calling 911 right away is the most important step. Medical care within the first hour is the most critical. If anyone is seriously hurt, make sure not to move them unless there is a life-threatening situation. Make sure to also notify the police. Don’t move either one of the vehicles unless you need to, to avoid another accident. Set out flares to warn other drivers about the accident scene.
Get Important Information
You will need to gather critical information from the other person such as their name, address, the color, make and model of their vehicle, plus a license plate number, registration number and their insurance company. Also, get the names and contact information of anyone who witnessed the accident. Make sure to do this quickly because witnesses may only stop for a short time and will probably leave after the police arrive.
Report the Accident
If you need your car towed, call Suburban Autoworks and we will come to the accident scene as quickly as possible. You will then want to notify your insurance company, because this needs to be taken care of shortly after the accident. Delaying the notification to your insurance company could result in a denied claim. Most states also require a State Accident Report to be filed, including Pennsylvania, if anyone is injured or if there is significant vehicle damage. This report must be filed within 10 days of the accident. Forms are available at your local police department.
Assess the Damage
Contact your insurance company to make arrangements with an agent for an appraisal of damage. Contact your auto body shop to make an appointment for repairs. Suburban Autoworks specializes in vehicle collision repair and is a claims center approved by all insurance companies. Whether you vehicle has small or big damages, we will discuss all repair options before making any final decisions.
