The official start of summer has finally arrived. When the weather changes drastically your car needs to be prepared as much as you are. The heat, dust and stop-and-go traffic of the season’s road trips can take a major toll on your vehicle. Just like any other time of the year, the key to avoiding any type of vehicle failure is regular maintenance.
Here are some maintenance tips to make sure your vehicle is ready for summer:
Make sure to check the level of your windshield washer fluid and that your wiper blades are in good condition after the harsh winter weather. When you have a dirty windshield it makes having to see very difficult, posing possible safety hazards. Stock up on windshield washer fluid and have your blades replaced if they are in poor condition.
The worst thing to encounter on a hot summer day is that your vehicle’s air conditioning system isn’t working properly. If your air conditioning wasn’t working that well to begin with, an extremely hot summer day may do it in. Have a qualified technician at a general auto service center in Bucks County examine your system to make sure everything is properly in place.
It’s recommended that you flush your cooling system and refill it about every two years, or whatever is suggested in your owner’s manual. One of the biggest mechanical problems during the summer is your vehicle overheating. To avoid this problem, have a certified technician check your cooling system for any leaks and that the level, concentration and the condition of the coolant is correct. A 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze is usually recommended. Have a technician also check the condition of your clamps, hoses and belts.
It’s important to check your tire pressures once a month and make sure to do it when your tires have cooled off. Also, examine your tires for an excessive wear in the treads or any breaks in the sidewalls. Take your vehicle to an general auto service shop to have your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles and have them check for any alignment issues. Before you leave for a long road trip, check the air in all of your tires and make sure your spare and your jack are in good condition just in case.
